  • Colvic 34 ketch

This Colvic came to us after it had a collision resulting in damage to pul and push pit, toerail and bow sprit along with some gel repairs on the topsides.

As you will see we had to remove both the pull and pushpit, as they were badly damaged, we sent this to our fabrication contractors so new ones could be fabricated.

In the meantime we set to work on the wood work required. First was the toe rail, we removed the top capping section of wood and the side rubbing strake, this was milled up ready to fit new and remount. we then filled the damage section with epoxy cut the teak to size and fitted to the boat securing with new screws and doweled all. We then sanded this section to finish.

We then started on the bowsprit damage, once we removed the pulpit, windlass and cabling for lights etc from deck we moved the forstay fitting from fixing point, we removed the bow spirit from boat and all relevant plates fixing etc. This landing area was then cleaned up ready for new wood work. We supplied the hard wood for the new bowsprit and fascia plates. Both were milled up and all glued together, then sanded and prepped for fitting. Both were fitted and secured in place. We then refitted the forstay fitting and cleaned up the working area.

  • Azumit 38 Teak floor install and storage fabrication

This project was carried out in 2013/14 here at Southsea Marina.

The first stage of the project was for the old carpet flooring to removed from the saloon, cabin hallway, galley and steering area.
The areas were then cleaned and any old glue/bonding materials removed.
We then template the new flooring areas ready for the 12mm teak and holly plywood, templates are cut and dry fitted in place.
Once all parties are in agreement the flooring is varnished with 5 coats then fitted and sealed with Sikaflex.

Next to section was a repair to the aft teak deck, the rotten sections were cut away and the area cleaned ready for new teak.
New decking was fitted in place, all the seams were sanded, ready for priming.
We then applied sikaflex primer and sikaflex 290 Deck caulking, the whole area was sanded back to unify in with the rest.

The owner also needed a combined storage for life rafts and seating area.
We measure and templated the area, fabricated a mould for the unit, gel coated the mould and fibre glassed the new pod.
Broke the pod out of the mould, cleaned up and polished to finish.
This was then fitted to the boat, 2 locker lids were fabricated along with 2 life raft pods, finally we fabricated a new fibre glass back rest and fitted this.

  • Dehler 41 – Spray Hull

Here is a Dehler 41, came into the workshop for a re-spray during may 2018.
We sanded the hull and carried out a vapor test on hull before works, this is done to check there are no problems with the paint/hull structure when using this paint as it mat react to certain substrates on the hull, we also checked for any defects on hull.

The hull was them cleaned off and the Awlcraft 545 primer coats were applied, once applied the hull was sanded and re-taped. We then washed down the hull with hot water, allowed this to dry before carrying out a chemical clean.
The Awlcraft 2000 topcoats were then applied, colour flag blue. Re-tape the cravita line and water lines we removed cover tape to show old line markings, sanding all lines and washed down, these were then applied using a spray application, colour snow white. De-taped and areas cleaned up.

The removal of transfer from hull and transom, we took lots of pictures and measurements when removing old decals, we then contacted a external company for the Dehler 41 decal and also the dehler logo. The boats name we so supplied.
We finished the job off with the application of antifoul, Micron Extra 350 was used in this application.

  • Sparkman & Stephens 36f SY – Keel and plank work

‘Clarinet’ – The 36ft Sailing yacht was custom made by Sparkman and Stephens ltd
The boat hit an object in the water at speed and was taking on water.
The boat was lifted at Southsea Marina and JWS was asked to take a look at the damage caused to the keel and if any subsequent damage to the hull and hull planking had been caused, as JWS marine has a wealth of experience in the restoration and refit to the old wooden boats.

We were instructed to supply an estimate of repair based on our findings.
The repair required was to the keel and plank with fracturing along the plank grain, we removed the anti-foul with soda blasting and then sanded the hull clean so the hull could be checked again for any hidden damage to the planks etc.
JWS repair the splits in the planking and splined seams by routing out along the plank length and replacing with new milled splines as required and rake out any disturbed putty. Clean up and replace old caulking as required then re-fill the seams with linseed putty as required, prime the hull and re-anti-foul the hull to finish.

  • Sigma 41 Grounding Damage

The Sigma came to us in 2009 after grounding damage was caused while sailing through Langstone Harbour. This caused damage to the keel, resulting in a new two-part keel being made.

The keel was drilled and tapped to suit the template required. All new stainless steel 316 bolts, nuts and washers were supplied and the keel was finished in a two-pack epoxy primer.

We removed the old keel and carried out any welding to cracks. All the old bedding was cleaned out from the hull landings, ready for the new keel to be fitted. We re-fitted the new keel with new keel bolts and plates. This was then filled and faired. The keel was then sanded and all exposed areas were coated in epoxy again. To finish, the keel was primed and anti-fouled.

There was the remedial work for the inside to be completed also, so do to this we removed all soft fixtures and furnishings and tented up inside for all preparation for grinding. Four areas of delamination were noted at time of inspection, so these areas were grounded back, re-laminated with equivalent layers of matting and gel washed to finish. We also checked the hull matrix for any further de-lamination. This was found to be okay. We finished this section of work with a clean up of all areas and replacing of all soft furnishings. We also had One Degree West check the engine alignment and all was found okay.
