  • Total Refit of a Fairey Huntsman

This project cam to us back in 2007, it was one of several vessels converted from the Fairey spearfish patrol vessels to the more well known Fairey Spearfish power cruiser, after she was purchased, the owner opted for a survey report to be carried out, once this was done we had a good general idea of what was required.

The project was on a grand scale, with the owner closely involved alongside some other contractors, specialising in other field of the re-fit.

JWS main areas of repair/refit were –

Complete renovation of the cabin, this included all timber work, roof linning, galley area, windows and frames. Wall lining and upholstery, carpets and timber flooring and joinery to heads.

Complete renovation of cockpit, which included new teak flooring throughout forming a new design but maintaining adequate support. • Yamaha Jet-ski Fiberglass repair

Came to us for repair covered by their insurance policy in July 2020.

The engine had to be removed to gain access to internal working and repair fracture, once this access was made we started to cut away all fractured area and grind backed all the fractured ares both inside and out.
All laminates were cut and prepped ready for laminating the damaged area, the application of the laminate was carried out on both the inside and out of the damaged area as required to re-build areas back to the original thickness.
The inside of the repair was sanded back and the a gel coat matching the internal colour was applied, the outside repair was sanded down and then the area was filled and fired with gelcoat.

The hull was shaped back to required finished lines and a black gel coat applied to the repair area, the gel coat was then shaped and the hull polished.

The hull had a full internal and exsturnal clean ready for engine to be fitted.

When it came to refitting the engines, the control panel flaged up a engine managerment fault, this was more than likely a fault with the ECU, althoug this was not related to the work JWS carried out, we did arrange for the engine to be hooked up and tested by a specialist machine and the fault was corrected later that same day.

  • Insurance work – Keel damage following a collision

A Dufour 2800 came to us in 2014 with suspected keel damage following a collision with an unknown submerged object.
Up the insurer approval we started the job by assembling a cradle for the keel before prepping all the keel bolts for removal.
The keel bolts were removed form the hull.

A basic clean of the keel and the bolts was carried out as follows –
Keel was tented up ready for grinding, then a light grind to remove the rust back to a good metal, we then applied a rust inhibitor followed by Chromite paint.
All keel bolts were wired brushed and all landing cleaned and prepped.

Upon removal of the keel there was some fracturing found on the laminate face of the hull, we had to repair this by grinding back the hull join in way of fracture, laminate back to good glass then re-laminate area back to orginal thickness.

All was fill and faired ready for keel refit.

The drop pin rollers were all removed and checked to be ok, all assemble was then refitted in preperation for refitting of the keel.

The keel was refitted and a seal was made anround the join, the lift and drop of the keel was checked before before recradleing

All was sanded, primed and antifouled.

Some rope and other debris had got wrapped around the propeller so we removed this and gave the prop a good clean.

  • Hull Re-spray on a 24ft Sailing yacht (Bilge keel)

This 24ft bilge keel had a couple of jobs for us to complete, back in late 2012 mainly the respray of the hull and lines, however the owner opted to have the hull blasted to remove old anti-foul.
While she was in the shed we fitted a new rubbing strake.

Hull blast along with both keels, the keel were then epoxy coated with 5 coats of Corro-tech.
2 keel seams applied using Sikaflex.
2 coats of primer (Gel shield 2000) followed by 2 coats of International Micron Extra in Black.
The hull was then re-taped and a new boot-top line was applied using Trilux (White)
The Respray – Upon receiving the boat we carried out a walk around inspection to check for any defects, all are noted and the owner was informed.
First we sanded the hull flat, then taped up and covered the boat with polythene sheeting.
We primed the hull with 5 coats of 545 epoxy primer.
This was followed by a complete sand of the hull, all fine line tape was replaced if required.
Any filling and faring of the hull was done, touching in with 545 and re-sanding where required.

The topside were the sprayed with Awlcraft 2000, Flag Blue, this was allows to harden off for 2 days, we the re-taped in preparation to paint the light blue lines down the hull, the ine areas were sanded and prepper, the 5 coats applied of Awlcraft, SkyBlue was applied.

  • Westerly Conway – Refurbishment of internal floors, headlining and Treadcote

Boat was already with us for a Full osmosis treatment followed by a Copper coat application.
While in the workshop the owner opted to have some areas of the boat refurbished, starting with the headlining’
We removed all the old headlining from the saloon and front cabin, on removal once the headlining materials was separated from the ply wood panels, each panel was assess to see if it could be re-used.

All surface areas were cleaned in preparation for the new headlining to go back up. Once up they were finished off with teak battening, varnished with 2 coats of Gloss varnish.

Quite a few of the panles had to be replaced so we set about measuring and cutting the new panels from ply, these were thenc covered in Nautolex Vinyl, the colour used in this application was Ivory.

All surfaces were clean and prepped ready for the new headlining to be refitted.

Once fitted we finsihed it off with teak battening which we applied 2 coats of Gloss varnish.

The flooring in the saloon and the cockpit stairs were in need of some TLC, so we removed all the loose flooring, taped up ready for sanding, sanded then applied 6 coats of varnish.

The tread on the deck was looking dull and faded, so first we gave all the tread a good clean with Treadmaster cleaner, we followed this up with the application of Treadcote paint, the colour used here was fawn.

We also carried out a Osmosis Treament followed by the application of Copper coat, please click the link below to take a look –

  • Refurbishment of a mast and varnish work on a Pilot cutter

We moved the mast into the workshop and set about stripping then fittings from the mast, these were refitted upon completion of varnish.
All the old varnish was then stripped from the mast, boom and bow sprits, all were sanded to a good finish.
We then applied 4 coats of SP3000 Epoxy primer and then 6 coats of clear Anti UV varnish.
The owner was very happy with the finish so decided to have all the wooden fittings on superstructure/deck varnished also, the same process as above was carried out.

The owner was happy with the varnishing carried out on the mast, to carry the look through the boat the owner opted to have the cabin sides, entrance hatch, grab rails and all with wooden rubbbing strake around the hull re-varnished also.
All were varnished using the same process and coat application as the mast.

  • Keel Removal on a 36ft Sweden Sailing Yacht

Came to us back in 2016 with keel damage caused by a grounding.
Our first job was to supply a cradle for the boat to sit in once the keel had been removed.
The interior removal was the next job, all interior in way of keel studs had to be removed so access could be gained, the studs were prepped for removal with all nuts and washer being removed then each stud removed one at a time, the studs were then kept safe ready for re-fitting, all nuts and washers were cleaned ready for re-fitting.
The keel was then ready to be removed from the hull, as always we had assistance with this from Southsea Marina, using their hoist we removed the keel and the hull was placed on the cradle and strapped down until refitting of the keel.

The keel and keel matrix for the hull was cleane using Sikaflex surface cleanerand all new sealent for the job supplied.

Then again with the marina assistance we hoisted the hull above the keel and refitted, we then applied a keel seam followed by a primer coaton the area worked.

  • New window install on a 32ft Sunseeker

Contacted us in January 2020 with regards to the windscreen on the Sunseeker, aged had taken its toll and it had become star crazed.
The boat wasn’t in Southsea marina so John arranged to visit the boat to inspect the work before providing cost.
Once the cost was agreed we set to work undoing all the stainless fixing and plates that held the window panel in place, all parts were named/marked ready for refitting, some were easy to remove others took more time and needed to be drilled out.

Once we had all the new perspex we were ready to refit the panels back on the boat installed the metal work and applied a Sikaflex seal around the all the windows.
The whole working area was then cleaned ready for owners inspection of work.

All parts and landings were cleaned and all perspex was taking to maunfatures of replacments.

We had to make amould for the sides panels, this was made from plywood forming materials, however as the mid window had more than 25mm deflection from 1 side edge to the other across the flats a more detailed forma had to be made, 2 mould were made from fibreglass with a wood frame.

Once we had all the perspex back we were ready to refit the panels back to the boat, install the metal work and apply a sikaflex seal around all the windows.

The owner of this returning boat requested the fabrication of a galley unit.
First we removed the cooker from the area.
We then set about making 3 new doors from teak for the new galley unit to match in with originals, we then painted the insides white.
Template all and fitted the ply fiddles, we then made 3 plywood shelves, primed all and applied a top-lac paint.
JWS supplied a new microwave and the owner supplied his own induction hobs, which we made a new Formica top to fit on induction hob.
