  • Yamaha Jet-ski Fiberglass repair

Came to us for repair covered by their insurance policy in July 2020.

The engine had to be removed to gain access to internal working and repair fracture, once this access was made we started to cut away all fractured area and grind backed all the fractured ares both inside and out.
All laminates were cut and prepped ready for laminating the damaged area, the application of the laminate was carried out on both the inside and out of the damaged area as required to re-build areas back to the original thickness.
The inside of the repair was sanded back and the a gel coat matching the internal colour was applied, the outside repair was sanded down and then the area was filled and fired with gelcoat.

The hull was shaped back to required finished lines and a black gel coat applied to the repair area, the gel coat was then shaped and the hull polished.

The hull had a full internal and exsturnal clean ready for engine to be fitted.

When it came to refitting the engines, the control panel flaged up a engine managerment fault, this was more than likely a fault with the ECU, althoug this was not related to the work JWS carried out, we did arrange for the engine to be hooked up and tested by a specialist machine and the fault was corrected later that same day.

  • Insurance work – Keel damage following a collision

A Dufour 2800 came to us in 2014 with suspected keel damage following a collision with an unknown submerged object.
Up the insurer approval we started the job by assembling a cradle for the keel before prepping all the keel bolts for removal.
The keel bolts were removed form the hull.

A basic clean of the keel and the bolts was carried out as follows –
Keel was tented up ready for grinding, then a light grind to remove the rust back to a good metal, we then applied a rust inhibitor followed by Chromite paint.
All keel bolts were wired brushed and all landing cleaned and prepped.

Upon removal of the keel there was some fracturing found on the laminate face of the hull, we had to repair this by grinding back the hull join in way of fracture, laminate back to good glass then re-laminate area back to orginal thickness.

All was fill and faired ready for keel refit.

The drop pin rollers were all removed and checked to be ok, all assemble was then refitted in preperation for refitting of the keel.

The keel was refitted and a seal was made anround the join, the lift and drop of the keel was checked before before recradleing

All was sanded, primed and antifouled.

Some rope and other debris had got wrapped around the propeller so we removed this and gave the prop a good clean.

  • Colvic 34 ketch

This Colvic came to us after it had a collision resulting in damage to pul and push pit, toerail and bow sprit along with some gel repairs on the topsides.

As you will see we had to remove both the pull and pushpit, as they were badly damaged, we sent this to our fabrication contractors so new ones could be fabricated.

In the meantime we set to work on the wood work required. First was the toe rail, we removed the top capping section of wood and the side rubbing strake, this was milled up ready to fit new and remount. we then filled the damage section with epoxy cut the teak to size and fitted to the boat securing with new screws and doweled all. We then sanded this section to finish.

We then started on the bowsprit damage, once we removed the pulpit, windlass and cabling for lights etc from deck we moved the forstay fitting from fixing point, we removed the bow spirit from boat and all relevant plates fixing etc. This landing area was then cleaned up ready for new wood work. We supplied the hard wood for the new bowsprit and fascia plates. Both were milled up and all glued together, then sanded and prepped for fitting. Both were fitted and secured in place. We then refitted the forstay fitting and cleaned up the working area.

  • Collision Damage on Sigma 38

The owner contacted JWS Marine Services to estimate on the damage caused on collision with an item in the water, the boat was under sail at the time and had come to a complete stop.

Luckily the owner was able to motor her back to Southsea Marina and the next day the boat was lifted out of the water for the initial inspection.

On inspection it was found that the keel had cracked along the keel plate and also the keel bolts that hold the keel in place were damaged also.
JWS Supplied a cost to remove the keel and clean the area up etc, working with a surveyor, unfortunately after a lengthy chat with the him and the owner it was agreed the old keel was beyond repair, and a new one would be required.
JWS instructed Iron Brothers to supply the complete keel as to the spec requested.

Additional work was required to the hull matrix’s as this was completely fractured, this had to be cut away and all was replaced.
We removed all the old anti-foul from the hull and re-applied new hull lines.

Finally the new keel was fitted and new hull/keel join applied and all re-commissioned.
